Are you tired of all the special shampoos, conditioners and all the other hoops you have to go through to maintain a healthy head of hair? Then, if you are, you may have heard of Viviscal or you may not.
I want to outline a few facts about hair loss that may come as a surprise and then offer some real practical advice as to what you can do about it before it is too late. After all, this is not such an unusual problem as one in three women will experience some hair problem in their lifetime.
Factors affecting your hair loss
There are many health and lifestyle factors which can all help us to lose hair. First there may be some genetic factors. For example, my father had a full head of hair until his death in his mid eighties. He maintained that was because he washed it every day and kept it rigorously short. My mother on the other hand had very weak hair and I inherited those genes so I no longer have a hair problem as that was all taken care of by baldness!
But other factor such as stress, medicines, menopause, hormonal changes, thyroid disorders and also scalp infections can all have disastrous consequences.
Lots of women suffer from split ends and are afraid to have their hair regularly trimmed. I would say that every four to six weeks is ideal. You can actually help your hair grow back by getting rid of dry ends as they actually will hinder the whole growing operation.
The role of diet in hair loss
Most specialists now agree that a poor diet coupled with an unhealthy or stressful lifestyle will play a much more important role than many people think. Hair is mostly (+80%) made up of protein so it needs protein to grow.
This is one of the many reasons why a low protein diet can cause many hair and scalp problems. But t does not stop there as we also need a balanced diet with the right amount of vitamins and minerals as well to ensure that we have healthy hair.
The ideal hair diet
Ideally we should be aiming to eat about 150 grams of protein a day and that is easily found in eggs, meat, cheese and legumes. Protein is the vital building block to keep the hair follicles strong. The rest of the diet should be rich in:-
- iron – lentils are the best as they contain about 7 mg per serving and the average woman needs about 18 mg a day. Other veggies full of iron are spinach, kidney beans, soya and broccoli.
- zinc – usually found in cereals and some seafood.
- essential fatty acids (omega 3) found in fish and nuts.
- silica – found in potatoes, bananas, beer and raisins
- vitamins A and C which are found in a wide range of fruit. These are essential as they can help to generate enough sebum to keep the hair and scalp healthy. Vitamin C is essential to help your body absorb iron.
What about hair extensions?
Once very popular with Hollywood actresses, the hair extensions are now proving to be very unpopular as many starts have spoken out about the problems associated with these.
Jennifer Aniston made it very clear that she would never try this as solution (whether long term or short term) ever again! The usual problems associated with sewing, adding or weaving hair to existing strands have cause not a few problems, such as:-
- scalp problems (itchy rash)
- hair thinning
In spite of that some noteworthy people in the fashion world such as Victoria Beckham and Peaches Geldof still think they are a great idea. But tricologists have warned that they can only damage the strands.
